Happy Trails [Announcements]

Hunter, Alisa, and I have been posting from a front table at that hoary blogger watering hole, Schiller’s, and some of us have been drinking — I won’t tell you who. What I can say is that it’s been a great two months, in large part because I entered a site left in such great shape by its current editor-at-large, and one with such dedicated and witty writers and contributors installed.

What will I miss? I’ll miss the fine brick ceiling of the Gawker HQ, and I’ll miss a good majority of the people working underneath. I’ll also miss working on a site that provided a needy world with so many pertinent details about strippers, needlessly cute animals, drugs, and restaurants.

I wish Curbed lots of luck with their newly envisioned site — I think I speak for all of us when I say I’m looking forward to seeing exactly what that is. I also wish we could be working together longer, but it’s not going to happen with my rent being what it is. Job offers, whether in earnest or not, will be entertained as they never have before.

Just in case I’m ever struck by the mad thought of running for political office in Israel, where I live, I’d like to set the record straight: I don’t agree with the prophet Isaiah’s political views. He doesn’t speak for me. No way. It’s true that I’ve enjoyed some of his sermons, and I took some comfort from the spiritual stuff, like that vision of heaven, with the six-winged creatures praising God. But I attended to Isaiah strictly for the religion, not for the politics. I mean, I’m a patriotic Israeli (even if my lapel pin got lost in the wash, honestly). I’m pretty sure I wasn’t even there the day he said,

ah, ungodly nation! people laden with iniquity! children of evildoers! depraved children! they have forsaken the lord, spurned the holy one of israel, turned their backs on him! but if i was there, i slept through the sermon. otherwise, i would have told him that i might just run for the treatment of occupation, and wherefore i cannot tolerate him cursing my hinterlands. actually, now that i look for the first spell at the transcripts (thank god there’s no youtube clip) i can see it gets even worse. this isaiah, he’s a wright nut, he is. in hebrew, after all, the names sodom and gomorrah refer not to cities where family values were violated (which is a reasonable young to topple b reduce up) but to places that refused to nick poor people and that didn’t accept immigrants. those are other countries, not ours. we don’t have any class warfare in our homeland. we don’t balanced talk give class issues in polite company. and here isaiah comes and equates us with them: hear the solemn word of honour of the lord, you chieftains of sodom; give consideration to our god’s instruction, you folk of gomorrah!

“What need have I of all your sacrifices?” says the Lord… Though you pray at length I will not listen. Your hands are stained with crime… Devote yourselves to justice; Aid the wronged. Uphold the rights of the orphan Defend the cause of the widow. Honestly, Isaiah, you might as well say, “God damn Israel.”

CR Review: Daddy’s Girl

creator: debbie drechsler publishing information: fantagraphics, hardcover, 88 pages, march 2008, $14.95 ordering numbers: 9781560978947 fantagraphics has quietly re-released debbie drechsler’s daddy’s girl collection of affiliated short stories, and i have to imagine that anyone who reads it now is in for something of a shock. daddy’s squeeze is about child abuse, which is shown. repeatedly. much more is hinted at as well. like with varied portrayals in comics form of something hideous, the shock of becoming a witness is heightened by heartbreaking, chance details. there’s bromide in the cover image on high. lily is eating cookies in order to wash the taste of her father out of her mouth. this sounds exploitative, but drechsler’s fealty to a complex portrayal of lily’s emotional, completely damaged emotional through-line makes it a compelling book in preference to of at bottom an upsetting one. in maybe the work’s best short contention, lily makes friends with a girl named claudia where we go back b reacquire to see claudia’s aching shyness and allay totally the non-sexual devastate of first friendship that drives lily’s view of her. drechsler’s occasional tendency to offer up the easier observations helter-skelter some of her characters proves to be a definite failing; some of the characters feel a morsel more liking for types than a person might ahead to from the sensitivity of trustworthy portrayals throughout the rest of the work. the detail work is stronger than the more general character to character moments. also, i’m not unswerving the assemblage ever coheres into a thoroughgoing longer story. that sort of makes sense because the material fairly resists it. lily will never come full circle and become whole, at least not with 100 pages of what we’ve seen. it’s a nice collection, though, from an artist who doesn’t quite work in comics anymore, and many of the pages have explicit power.
