Atlanta, Georgia (CNN) — U.S. cities are racing to cope with ever-increasing demand on public transportation as gas prices remain at record levels.

Rx for Ailing U.S. Mass Transit Policy: A Dose of Competition
… federal capital grants have generated a mad scramble among cities to secure … demand responsive taxicab service versus publicly operated mass transit systems …

High gas prices in recent months have had a considerable impact on commuters using public transportation, statistics show.

Even regions that have traditionally resisted giving up cars and have limited access to mass transit are reporting a surge in public transportation use.

From trains and trolleys to subways and buses, the growth encompasses all modes of travel, according to the American Public Transportation Association, a Washington D.C.-based industry group.

Cities are using a variety of measures to meet that demand, according to an informal APTA survey of some transit systems.

For example, the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority, which is currently operating at capacity during peak periods, is asking its commuters to travel during off-peak periods. The MBTA has also ordered more subway cars, buses and coaches for its commuter rail.

Edison volquez

In North Carolina, the Charlotte Area Transit System has increased the frequency of light rail service on the weekends, ordered new buses and is taking a look at low-performing routes to cut down on costs.

Don’t Miss

And the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority, which serves Philadelphia and has seen about 20,000 new daily customers since last July, has ordered 400 new hybrid buses and 120 new rail cars.

Other measures being used or considered by transit systems include changing schedules to increase frequency of buses and trains, creating bus-only lanes and taking out seats on trains to make more room for commuters.

Crosscut Seattle - Get on the bus, Gus, unless it costs too much
… shredded the revenue going to public transit, agencies scrambled to cover a 40 … by legislation and for transferring money from mass transit to highways. …

‘The paradox of public transportation’

While the rise in ridership has been a relatively easy adjustment for some systems, others are facing difficulties in meeting operating costs, which hampers their ability to ramp up service or maintain normal levels.

Cal Marsella, the head of Denver, Colorado’s transit system, calls it the "paradox of public transportation."

Denver’s system, like many U.S. cities, is partly funded by revenues from sales taxes. As consumers spend less because of high fuel costs and a sour economy, the city earns less revenue. Consequently, funding for the transit system is decreasing just when their operating costs are higher than ever before.

Light Rail Now! NewsLog - Light Rail Transit News
“We projected 8,400 (more) riders a day” GM Cal Marsella told Mass Transit. … streetcars can play a role in the city’s future; 2) meet technical challenges …

"Just when our demand is highest, our ability to provide is being undermined by the whole crunch," Marsella said. "The last thing we want to do is curtail service but there is not a lot you can do when revenues are down and fuel prices are up."

False Dreams and Broken Promises: The Wasteful Federal Investment in …
This year funding for mass transit may rise by as much as 20 percent to nearly … generated a mad scramble among cities to secure federal transit dollars to pay …

The Denver Regional Transit District, however, saw the high prices coming and was able to lock in the price of diesel fuel earlier this year at $3.20 a gallon — a price far cheaper than what the market is right now. That contract expires at the end of this year.

As a tribute to a young life tragically cut short, Susan Muska and Gr ta Olafsd ttir’s The Brandon Teena Story (1998) is both fitting and passionate. As the pair’s first feature-length documentary, this 88-minute film focuses on the life of Brandon Teena (born Teena Renae Brandon), a girl who gradually became more comfortable as a young man…and was killed for it in 1993, unfortunately. Brandon made a number of bad choices that didn’t exactly help her situation along the way, including theft, compulsive lying and forgery—but no matter what she did wrong, it wasn’t worth murder, not by a long shot.

Britney Spears and Madonna are working together again! The 26-year-old pop star and sad driver of toy cars will shoot a video that will run on multiple 1,000-foot screens at Madge’s upcoming Sticky & Sweet tour. “Who cares?” you might think, but then again, if you start dreaming up possible video scenarios instead of doing your job, this news can actually be pretty fulfilling. (Especially when doing this IS your job.)

Right now I’m picturing Britney loungin’ on a plush cigarette-shaped sofa, casually popping cheese puffs into her mouth one by one while barely watching the only copy of Britney and Kevin: Chaotic ever purchased on DVD. (Side note: That horror show inspired one of EW.com’s all-time great TV Watches. Read it here.) The song is “Justify My Love (Of Chemical Additives Remix),” which will bleed seamlessly into “Candy Shop” right after Madonna bounds into the room doing a series of Tae-Bo kicks, then swings Britney around by her hair extensions for having such unhealthy eating habits. They’ll kick and scream, make up, exchange friendship bracelets composed of red string, then make out, because they realized they should never have been fighting, considering their mutual love of candy.

Daily Blog Buzz: A Venue Fit for Obama

Big Democratic convention news yesterday: Barack Obama will give his acceptance speech at the 75,000-seat Denver Broncos’ Invesco Field, rather than the measly 20,000-seat convention hall as originally planned.

Obama’s campaign manager David Plouffe wrote in an email, “Barack will leave the convention viagra rezeptfrei bestellen hall and join more than 75,000 people for a huge, free, open-air event where he will deliver his acceptance speech to the American people. It’s going to be an amazing event, and Barack would like you to join him.” I’m quite honored, and so are many lefty bloggers who are excited about the venue change for this momentous occasion. Andrew Sullivan says it will be “quite a night.” And Daily Kos blogger blitz boy proclaims, “This is going to give Obama a huge bounce after the convention. 75,000 people packing a stadium to see a politician won’t go unnoticed.”

Other bloggers are less enthused. NRO’s Jim Geraghty notes the upsides and downsides but ultimately concludes, “Potential for rain. Probably all kinds of logistics issues for the networks, needing two separate booths at the arena and the stadium, etc.” TNR’s Jonathan Cohn says, “Maybe they can put umbrellas in the packages of swag that conventioneers and media get.” And Marc Ambinder notes, “It’s going to cost the convention committee a lot of money to make the move, but Invesco Field can generic cialis handle more than 75,000 spectators and will make a much better picture.”

Aha, that’s it. As the Next Right’s Patrick Ruffini asks, “Could Obama’s desire for a final night worthy of the NFL, like his Presidential seal, go down as yet another example of his super-sized arrogance?”

ASIA - Alpha (1983)

alpha is the second album from supergroup asia. the lineup which consist of geoffery downes ( yes) on keyboards, steve howe ( yes) on guitar, carl palmer ( the crazy world of arthur brown, atomic rooster, emerson, lake & palmer) on drums and john wetton ( king crimson, uk, uriah heep) on bass and vocals is unchanged since the self titled debut which was released in 1982 the year before the release of alpha.

The music unfortunately has changed a bit towards the worse. The debut had some enjoyable moments where you could hear that these four musicians where once some of the most prolific people on the British prog rock scene. I don´t care much for the debut but it had a few progressive moments, that were at least partially enjoyable. Alpha sees Asia digging even deeper into AOR symphonic rock territory. The songs are now even more simplistic and plastered with commercial sounding keyboard parts and especially memorable pop choruses. I won´t point out any song on this album for being either worse or better than the others as all the songs melt together into one big pile of plastic music. The cheesy lyrics are just horrible too. Banale pop lyrics written for an audience who doesn´t demand anything else but girl loves boy lyrics.

The musicianship is of course good, but nothing here really demands good musicians maybe except for the choir arrangements which are well done but too cheesy.

The production is thin. An eighties nightmare. Well I´m being a bit harsh here as I would normally love bestellen cialis a production like this but put in the context of the weak songs the production fails.

The coverart signals prog rock which is false marketing.

Well there isn´t really anything I like about this album and I will give this a small 2 star rating. I would love to give this one a 1 star rating but as there is nothing wrong with the quality of the compositions and it´s really just a matter of personal taste if you like this music or not. I viagra ohne rezept can´t recommend this to prog lovers though. by UMUR ASIA Music Online: recommended progarchives.com worldwide prog rock stores

wall to wall foxgloves - harlech june 2008has anyone else noticed how much more creative wildflowers occur to be this year? could it be the result of last year’s wet summer? wales was awash with foxgloves on holiday - woodland, hillsides, you name it and most beautiful they looked too. a lot of the roadside verges around here are so covered with cow parsley and oxeye daisies at the moment, i need sunglasses - even-tempered on a rainy time. i’ve always loved how the ‘donkey field’ on my walk to the station looks at this yet of year as it’s blue with thousands of pasture cranesbill flowers.it’s made me excogitate my garden and guerilla gardening habits lately. here in the uk we’re blessed with a temperate climate which gives us an opportunity to pick plants from the widest of palettes, from alpine through to tropical. our history of establish hunters exploring the four corners of the earth, bringing home lively specimens and seeds has also expanded our pre-eminent, although occasionally with disastrous results - take japanese knotweed for example. both help to define what we are as a ‘nation of gardeners’. but beget we made things more ill-behaved for ourselves? create furtively to when you were a beginning gardening - did you prefer overwhelmed with the choice? how did you decide what to plant? of course there’s a variety of ways, but ‘listening to the locals’ i.e. declaration out which flowers, trees and shrubs grow pretentiously in your area could be a beneficent spot to start. i’m always amazed how many people buy rhododendrons at franks plants - we’re in a limestone zone, so most of the specimens purchased won’t thrive unless they’re put in pot with ericaceous soil or some extra once upon a time is spent at regular intervals adding acidic materials to that duty of the garden. i’ve vocal to people there sometimes (for some reason, complete strangers move along disintegrate up to me out of the chap-fallen and start asking me gardening questions) and most of them have no intimation of the implications of what they’re buying - they impartial like the look of the plant.so do spend some things ‘just looking’ before buying and planting - look at what works well in your neighbours’ gardens. see which wildflowers are growing locally. these all will give you clues and ideas in favour of your own garden. roy lancaster’s what plant where is a brilliant guide as is the reasonable adventures museum’s postcode database - put in your postcode and out pops a list of basic plants for your emolument. use these tools and it’ll help your garden to thrive, look good and take less point to look after. notwithstanding how i don’t slavishly follow this guidance - after all i do have many favourites originating from all over the circle plus some pots in my garden for acid lovers. but then gardening is my passion and i don’t mind the extra oeuvre i’m giving myself!where does this fit with my guerilla gardening activities? gardening tips ‘n’ ideas had a rant recently about guerilla gardeners replacing the local native plants of his vicinage. i can take his disquiet, after all the australian flora is very valuable and increasingly high threat. here in the uk it’s not so much of an issue as most guerilla gardening is in a very urban environment where little or no native flora is being replaced by their activities - and we could have a humongous deliberation about which of our habitats are ‘natural’ anyway, but not today. however, as plainly as my own guerilla gardening is perturbed, i’ve realised that on the whole (apart from daffodils) i’ve applied the principles i’m advocating here to what i’ve planted so far. snowdrops and
